The Floriculture Of Naturalistic Design

A naturalistic design draws on nature and the garden for its inspiration and incorporates the grouping of flower and foliages and the use of natural materials, such as branches, stones, moss, bulbs, fruit, or seedpods. Grouping means to place flowers and foliages in units or sections of just one type as if they were growing that way in nature. A designer who understands how plants grow and knows the plants' relative heights to each other can add a realistic touch to the design. Think of this design as a "little niche of nature" or a miniature landscape. The possibilities and combinations are endless. A design could represent the spring woodland, the summer garden, or the autumn roadside. The designs can be designed with all fresh-cut flowers, fresh and dried materials, or a combination of fresh flowers and potted plants.
The containers used to design naturalistic arrangements vary from low baskets and bowls to saucers and trays. Moistened green sheet moss masks the floral foam and is allowed to show, giving a realistic landscape look to the arrangement. Foliages can be placed into the designs in rosettes with the stems all emerging from one place as if it were growing in the woodland. The rosette technique mimics the growth of ferns and other plants and is very natural looking. Use longer leaflets on the outer ring and progressively shorter leaflets toward the middle of the rosette.
Accessories, such as realistic purchased birds, nests, butterflies, and even insects, can add interest and realism to the design. Do not over-do the accessories, rather, let the plant materials be the most important part of the design.
Wrapping a Potted Plant
Learning to decorate a potted plant is an important basic skill for a floral designer. A beautifully decorated plant can be a welcome gift or display feature. There are several ways to decorate blooming plants and foliage plants. The pot can be hidden by inserting it into baskets, containers, and preformed pot covers that look like upside-down hats and by wrapping the pot with foil or cellophane or both. Decorated pots can be adorned with ribbons, birds and nests, branches, or seasonal items, such as hearts or shamrock accessories.
Foil is available as two types—lightweight foil and poly foil. The lightweight foil is colorful on one side and silver on the other. Poly foil is a thicker foil with a thin plastic covering on the silver side. In addition to wrapping potted plants, poly foil is useful as a liner in baskets or containers with drainage holes or as a protective liner for containers that need be protected from moisture. Foil is available in many colors and patterns. The designer may choose which colorful side to display.
